Review: Vengeance By The Foot

Vengeance By The Foot
Vengeance By The Foot by Adam Light

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Firstly, I made the mistake of eating while I read this! GOOO!
This was a fun little story, it's a very quick read and it worked well.
Feet are disgusting in my opinion. The only use they have is to walk on.
This story took everything that is disgusting about them and amplified it, making this a cringe filled gooey horror comedy.
If the authors aim was to make me squirm, he did it. well done.

Review: 20th Century Ghosts

20th Century Ghosts
20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this collection.
I reviewed each of the stories as I went through, you can find each of those in their own listings.
Usually collections of short stories have the odd story which is good, but mostly they're a bit crap.
This collection was the opposite. There were one or two of the stories which I felt didn't really belong in the collection. But overall I would say 95% of the stories in this collection were really really good! More than good enough to stand on their own.
I was already a hill fan having read his novels before starting this collection. This only made me more of a fan.
Can't wait for his next work. "The Fireman" coming soon!

Review: Voluntary Committal

Voluntary Committal
Voluntary Committal by Joe Hill

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Definitely the best one in the collection. Really enjoyed this one!
It was quite a bit longer than the others, more of a novella than a short story, but it was a really fun read.
This was an early sign of the brilliant stories that were to come from Joe Hill.

Review: My Father's Mask

My Father's Mask
My Father's Mask by Joe Hill

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

That was creepy and weird. It had sort of an Alice in wonderland feel to it.
I'm not 100% sure I fully understood everything being honest. Was it pretend? Was it a dream? Or did it all actually happen?
I guess those questions mean that the story was a success because it got me wondering.
Almost a dark fairy tale, a modern day Grimm. Worth a read.

Review: Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead

Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead
Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead by Joe Hill

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Much like the last story in this collection, it isn't really scary. I'm fact it's a bit of a love story.
It's the old high school crush thing. What would've could've should've happened and then they grow up and meet. And realise that it just doesn't work that way.
A nice story, just not even a bit horror.

Review: Shattering

Shattering
Shattering by J.D Evies

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not for me this one I'm afraid. I think perhaps the category was misleading as this was placed in "Thriller"
While the thought and subject of the story may be tense, I certainly would not call it a thriller.
Perhaps more "political fiction" or something similar to that.
The writing itself while quite good at times also felt a bit pretentious. As if the writer maybe thought his readers are possibly beneath him and wouldn't fully understand his point. (as follows the subject of the story).
The idea itself is very true to life and very frightening, I just think that it wasn't portrayed quite as well as it could have been.

Review: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well that was pretty damn cool wasn't it!
This was the first book my wife ever read by Stephen King and she has been trying to get me to read it for years.
Well finally I have. I'm really glad I did. This is a great story, and Kings writing is so good that you find yourself emotionally attached to Trisha as she makes her long journey.
Definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys reading! If you want to try some King and you're not a big horror fan then this one is perfect for you.

Review: Bad Meat

Bad Meat
Bad Meat by Greg Wilburn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this short story. It had a bit of a Hannibal feel to it, but had a lot of originality.
It was quite gruesome in parts and quite detailed about certain things, but I think that is what made it.
It only takes about ten minutes to read the whole thing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I say have a little taste, you might like it.

Review: Dead-Wood

Dead-Wood
Dead-Wood by Joe Hill

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

That was really short! Possibly the shortest in the book, it's only one and a half pages.
Sadly, I didn't really like this one. I don't think I fully understood it? Maybe I just rushed through it because it was so short?
I can only compare it to the other stories in the collection and on that basis, this one is only a two star.

Review: The Pond

The Pond
The Pond by Thomas Washburn Jr.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This wasn't too bad.
Being honest, I predicted what was going to happen almost immediately, but the idea was good.
I liked the writing style itself, it made it very easy to read. A lot of authors get lost in an attempt to build a scene and usually fill a story with unnecessary descriptions. This kept it simple and too the point.
Not bad overall.

Throw A Punch
Throw A Punch by Andrew Lennon

My rating: 0 of 5 stars

THIS IS NOT A REVIEW!

This is the latest short story I've written. It's only around ten pages long so it's quite a quick read.
The aim is one day to have enough shortys to put together into a collection. Until then I'm making these available for free on smashwords.

If you are interested in downloading this story you can find it free to download here:

That was a little bit morbid. I'm not sure why I enjoyed it, but I did enjoy it.
It was definitely different! Very dark, very macabre. And definitely very weird.

Review: The Cape

The Cape
The Cape by Joe Hill

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The only problem with that short story, was the fact that it was a short story!
I really liked it, the whole idea of it was brilliant and the mind set of the character set it up so the story could've gone on for a lot longer to be a full length novel.
Super heroes are awesome! But dark "hero" stories are always just that bit better.
I have recently acquired the graphic comic based on this short story. I'm really hoping it leads into to awesome adventure!
Be even cooler if they turn this thing into a movie!

Review: They Thirst

They Thirst
They Thirst by Robert McCammon

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book started off pretty well and I really enjoyed two previous books from this author so I thought I was going to love it!
Sadly that wasn't the case, the first 200 pages or so we're good, but from then I found it a struggle. It became a bit slow moving at times and there seemed to be chapters here and there that didn't really need to be in the story at all.

I'll definit be checking more out by McCammon because like I said I enjoyed the previous two I read (boys life and swan song) so it's highly likely I'll enjoy others. Just not this one.

Right, where to begin? Um, that was frigging disgusting!!

A very short read, but a very good read! I don't want to give anything away, but if like me you read horror because you like that uneasy feeling you get from some things, or a squirmy feeling, check this out!

This is unlike anything I've read before, god I'm itchy now just writing this review......

Review: The Mole People Beneath the City

The Mole People Beneath the City
The Mole People Beneath the City by Evans Light

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the third story I've read by Evans Light. If I, being honest I predicted the end almost immediately. This didn't ruin the story though, it still had a creepy feel to it. It got to be point that I wasn't thinking WHAT will happen, the que was WHEN will it happen. The tension building was really good!
Light has a style of writing that makes his stories very easy to read. I will definitely be checking out more.

Review: Just a Story

Just a Story
Just a Story by Teresa Vanmeter

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

OK, I usually just leave my opinion on a book, but with this one I get the feeling the author may be quite young and new to writing? So I thought I would leave a little bit more detail.

This is a short story. I was able to read the whole thing while eating my sandwich, which was good because that's exactly what I was wanting to do.

The story itself wasn't too bad, the idea was good. It had a creepy vibe. The problem was it seemed to sort of jump from here to there and had a sort of rambling tone to it.
The grammar could use a looking at (some mis-use of "your/You're" etc) and one thing that really stood out, adverbs! So many adverbs! So much so that I found myself suddenly oddly attracted towards them. Seriously though, they stood out.

Like I say, the idea was good, but could just use a little work on the writing.

Not a bad attempt.

Review: The Hunted: A short story of terror

The Hunted: A short story of terror
The Hunted: A short story of terror by Jason McKenney

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Sorry, not really for me this one. Thought it was going to be scary, but I actu found it quite boring. It kept leading off on a tangent, telling different little tales that didn't re have any relevance to the story itself. And if I'm being honest, the first 40% could have been left out completely and the story probably would have benefited.
It's free on Amazon so was worth a try for a quick free read I guess.

Review: This Little Piggy

This Little Piggy
This Little Piggy by Craig McGray

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well that was a short but messed up piece of work there!
This is not for the faint hearted. I was wincing while I read parts of this. There are a lot of similarities to a particular scene in "Deliverance" where I would imagine the idea for the story came from.
This had its own character though, it's by no means a rip off.
Nice gory little shorty, worth a read!

Review: Trailer

Trailer
Trailer by Edward Lorn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I first came across Ed Lorn when I saw his freeby "The Naughty List" on promotion over Christmas. I'm not one to turn down free stuff so I grabbed it up and I really enjoyed it.
From then I have seen several comments on here for friends about Ed's books, all positive. And I really enjoy his reviews on Stephen Kings books!
So when I saw that he had a new book coming out and that it was only 20 pages I thought I'd have a little break from what I'm reading and check this out.
I'm certainly glad I did! This is a great short story, it gives just enough detail to make you wince, but not so much that it's ruined.
Thoroughly enjoyed this and I'll definitely be checking out more from Mr Lorn.
Good read, check it out.

I am staying in a creepy hotel again soon with work.
A few years ago when staying there I thought I would write a story about it. The majority of the things written in this story are true. Almost everything actually happened.
